Great day at Solitude Ski Resort
December 24th, 2007 | by jimmcint | So as I said a post ago or so, I was planning on skiing with Brig at Solitude Saturday. Since we knew this was going to be a blue bird day we planned on looking for great photo opportunities. We plan on posting all the photos and the full story on gear.com this week, but I thought I’d share the short update and some photos before then.
On Friday it snowed 10″ at my house near the base of Big Cottonwood Canyon and the reports from the resort were that they received anywhere from 12-15″, so we know we were going to be in for a decent morning. What we didn’t really plan on was being the first to cut the traverse into Honeycomb Canyon behind the ski patrol. We had our pick of the entire canyon. I do have to say though if you look in the pictures I’m going to link to below, it was a bit spooky to see an 8′ crown that ran over ball baring like snow for approximately 400 feet. Patrol did there job and bombed the rest of the area and made sure it was safe before letting us out there, but man if someone got caught in that slide… they’d be lucky to be found.
We had about 3 untracked runs in Honeycomb. The first one was the best simply because we got to pick our line and we did it with a ton of speed. I love caring a ton of speed on deep powder. We also found several choice drops throughout the morning.
Check out all the Solitude photos at my picasa site.
